Grade 8 Mathematics

Students in 8B and 8R have recently completed their second quiz relating to the following outcomes:
B-1    Students will be able to multiply & divide positive fractions & mixed numbers.
A-1    Students will be able to determine the perfect squares and square roots of whole numbers (N-1)
A-2   Students will be able to determine the approximate square roots of non-perfect squares or whole numbers (N-2)
A-3   Students will be able to apply the Pythagorean Relationship to solve problems (SS-1).

Students should now have 3 entries in their student tracking sheets (quiz #1 - A1 and A2 and test #1 - A1, A2, A3 and
quiz #2 - B1, A-1, A-2, A-3). The tracking sheets are designed to to be a useful communication tool between teacher, student and parent/guardian. The tracking sheets precisely identify on-going assessment(s) of all outcomes over the course of the school year and help students identify strengths & weaknesses in their math program.

Coupled with the tracking sheets, students will create reflection sheets after each test which target outcomes and concepts not yet fully grasped or mastered. Please take the time to review both the tracking sheets and reflection sheets with your son/daughter.

We are now currently working on Outcome B-1 "Students will be able to multiply & divide positive fractions & mixed numbers". Our next summative test will be comprised primarily of Outcome B-1, with reviewed targets A-1, A-2, and A-3.

There is now currently a student and parent website available from Nelson 8 Math Focus to assist students and parents in preparing/practicing most grade 8 math concepts. Please feel free  to visit the following site and follow the links.
http://www.nelson.com/mathfocus/grade8/      IE.  Once at the Nelson site, click on student site... and click on Try It Out to see the various concepts.
Below are links to the mental math practice books and homework resources for the above concepts. The mental math practice booklets have been ordered for each student and will be provided. The links below may be used to print off extra or forgotten practice sheets. Because not all of the pages from the homework resource booklets will be used they will not be supplied as booklets to students. Instead, individual pages will be assigned and students will be asked to print off the pages to bring to class or to complete at home as needed.

Below is also a copy of the new student outcome tracking sheets. These tracking sheets will be used by students to monitor individual achievement of outcomes as we progress throughout the school year.
